The author has - in about 250 pages - provided sufficient information about the situation existing among Italy's city-states for us to understand how such a dynasty could arise and play such a role in history. The author takes us by the hand and shows us how the Medici rose to power in their time and controlled the destiny of both Italy and the rest of the world during their dominance, and how their management of world trade and finance has shaped out pursuit of these endeavours to this day. All of this was accomplished by an artful combination of the control of government a nd religious leadership. Normally, when we think of the Medici, we think of the art surrounding their reign of power. There was art, certainly, but it was not derivative; it was inevitable as a result of their whole management system. This is still one of the finest books I have read on the subject. Recommended.
