2015 EU reissue on Numbered Limited 180g 45RPM 2LP +Hi-Res Download-In 2015 Peter Gabriel’s first four self-titled solo albums will be available on vinyl for the first time since 2002. The first three releases are affectionately known as 1 Car (1977), 2 Scratch (1978) and 3 Melt (1980) due to their iconic Hipgnosis designed covers. The fourth was named 4 Security (1982) for the American market upon its initial release.

Both Peter’s third and fourth self-titled solo albums were also released as German language vocal versions soon after their original English language versions.

About Germain version

Peter had wanted to explore recording the album in a different language, so made contact with his then record company to gauge interest:
“I wrote to the French, Italian, German and Spanish labels, saying I wanted to experiment creating a version of my album in another language. The only label to show any interest was the German, hence the choice.

It also gave me a chance to try new mixing and remixing approaches, with some new overdubs and to take another look at the lyrics through the process of translation with Horst Konigstein, with whom I spent a long time going through layers of meaning in the new language – I also insisted on having the German lyrics independently translated back to English.”

This German LP version of the album has been Half-Speed Remastered and cut to lacquers at 45RPM, across 2 x heavyweight LPs, to deliver maximum dynamic range in the sound. Vinyl cut by Matt Colton at Alchemy Mastering, mastered by Tony Cousins at Metropolis and overseen by Peter’s main sound engineer Richard Chappell. This album really has never sounded so good! It also looks amazing with the gatefold sleeve utilising imagery from the original LP inner bag and all images are newly re-scanned from original artwork.

The album comes with a download card with a choice of digital download (Hi-Res 24/96k or 16/44.1k), and is both Numbered and a Limited Edition – 3,000 for the World.

Co-produced by Peter and David Lord this is the first album where Peter really immersed himself in the music of distant lands and cultures. It was also his first fully digital recording. These two elements created a deeply effective soldering-together of futurism and generations-old tradition

All of the albums have been half-speed remastered and cut to lacquers at 45RPM, across two heavyweight 180g LPs to deliver maximum dynamic sound range. These records have really never sounded so good – pretty much as close to listening to the original master tape as it’s possible to get. The vinyl was cut by Matt Colton at Alchemy Mastering, mastered by Tony Cousins at Metropolis and overseen by Peter’s main sound engineer Richard Chappell.

These vinyl editions will be gatefold sleeves, utilizing imagery from the initial first LP pressings, sourced and re-scanned from original artwork. Each album comes in a numbered limited edition of 10,000 copies.

Produced by Steve Lillywhite this third album saw Peter change his writing style; now the rhythm came before the melody and the songs were built up on top of the rhythmic sequences. The album delivered the top 5 UK single "Games Without Frontiers" and Peter’s first overtly political song in the shape of totemic closer "Biko." It also features notable contributions from Kate Bush, Paul Weller, Phil Collins and David Rhodes.
