Niels Lan Doky is the young Danish pianist who began his recording C3reer wrm this label. Doky T't: :«s time between Europe and New York, just as his jazz tradition blends the American with the European. And all of his Storyville releases have blended young musiciansike Bob Berg and Terri Lyne Carrington with experienced professionals like Jack
DeJohnnette, Alvin Queen and Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen. This recording is another version of this scheme. The American pro here is Gary Peacock, who has played with musicians as varied as Albert Ayler and Keith Jarrett and he has recorded as a leader. The European continent is represented by Dane Alex Riel,long time house drummer at the world famous Jazz club Montmartre in Copenhagen.
This choice seat allowed Riel to play with countless Americans like Ben Webster,Bud Powell, Stuff Smith and he enjoyed a'particularly long association with Dexter Gordon.
A talented composer, Doky strives for a combination of
preparedness that leaves room for spontaneity. Doky's writing is a thorough
starting point for musicians, but he encourages his fellow musicians to bring
their own inspiration and ideas into the music. Watching this DVD is an even more vivid picture of the communication and enjoyment going on. Doky appears either intense, playful or romantic. Riel is either powerful or boyishly
amusing. And Peacock is contemplative or swinging. The visual aspect brings out
whole new aspects of the music. As a point of contrast, Doky always includes a
standard along with his original compositions. Here we see SECRET LOVE, not themost common tune in the jazz repertoire, but a lovely song nonetheless, wellplayed by this superb unit.
