Short story (plus epilogue) by Henry Miller about circus life, depicted by artists Klee, Lautrec, Picasso, Chagall, Rouault, Segonzac and a reproduced typoscript. ..
Merle Armitage is considered as one of the first US modernists in graphic design, inspiring the book design of the Black Sparrow Press of the late 80ties.
Remarkable is his use of red and blue (circles and stripes) in the design.
To help Miller with his money problems Armitage bought the manuscript for $500, hoping to get it published. Indeed, he got a distribution deal and designed the book himself, using circus art from his own collection. Afterwards Miller wrote Armitage his beautiful design brought him to tears of joy.
Miller kept silent about this real first edition when in 1959 he found a publisher to publish this novella again.
