Actually, all records that Mike Oldfield has released in the first ten years of his recording career born for vinyl. The multi-instrumentalist combined notably from the album "Platinum" (1979) a few long pieces for one side of the plate, while standing on the other side real songs. His next album "QE2" in 1980 introduced the Taurus trilogy, the third and last part is on "Crises". That's along with "Discovery" the undisputed hit album of Oldfield from the eighties. While on "Discovery" was alternating between pop songs and the old symphonic sounding material in perfect balance, Oldfield already supplied with "Crises" a good harbinger them off. And not unsuccessful, as known to many.

The album opens with the 20-minute title track. With much grandeur Oldfield always knows how to make the first few minutes impresses with a variety of instruments, lots of atmosphere and a constructive tension, before he goes to work out various themes. Unlike, for example, the unit within the four long pieces of "Incantations" Crises sounds like a series of cubes compositions. In particular, the connecting piece - with drummer Simon Philips in the lead - contains a beautiful building to the climax with the return of the main theme. The drumming of Philips is in this number at a peak; unfortunately he has after this play never developed as a drummer. Somewhere doing "Crises" is a bit reminiscent of the piece Force Majeure Tangerine Dream: especially given the fragmented nature and the mode of production, but the colorful musical signature of Oldfield is and remains recognizable. A classic in his oeuvre. On the B-side are five songs in which Oldfield explores the paths of pop music and he is not without merit. Singer Maggie Reilly Moonlight Shadow makes -Oldfield's tribute to John Lennon - a radio hit, but it adds little to the dull Foreign Affair, the sore spot of the album. Fortunately, Jon Anderson then made much impression In High Places and provides Roger Chapman finally, for the firm (foot) note in Shadow On The Wall. In between the third portion of Taurus: a short but very dynamic piece of folk in the best Oldfield tradition.

What an album as "crises" that has propped up the unit. The production - which sounds pretty transparent for 1983 - is on the whole plate and convincing suits both the long title track as the pop songs. A resemblance to any album by The Alan Parsons Project is of course not unusual in those years. The style of "Crises" would further perfect Oldfield on "Discovery": this record is - as already mentioned - a lot smoother and as on "Crises" after the title number None omschakelmoment 'to Moonlight Shadow. See both sides of this album as two same faces with different color eyes. Nevertheless Oldfield sold of "Crises" millions and is still one of his most successful records.
