Call it addition by subtraction. Steve Marriott stepped to the fore after the departure of Peter Frampton, and Humble Pie found its greatest success yet with the radio favorite “30 Days in the Hole.” ‘Smokin’ --’ which featured a slow-burn take on Eddie Cochran’s “C’mon Everybody,” the gospel-laden “You’re So Good For Me” and “Road Runner ‘G’ Jam” with guest star Stephen Stills -- also became Humble Pie’s best-charting U.S. album ever, landing at No. 6.

When Peter Frampton left Humble Pie, the band he co-founded, the group replaced him with fireball guitarist Clem Clemson. And Humble Pie grew a whole lot more raucous, more freewheeling and downright greasy. Smokin', the first album with Clemson, is unquestionably their greatest with Steve Marriott's soulful wail totally unleashed. Smokin' yielded the group's most memorable anthem - "30 Days In The Hole." Cut by Kevin Gray at AcousTech Mastering with the most intense attention paid to every minute detail, this reissue is positively Smokin'!

 After a couple of years of relentless touring, Humble Pie capitalized on their loyal U.S. following to capture the market with this, their fifth studio album. Although lead guitarist Peter Frampton was replaced by Clem Clemson -- an excellent player -- the band remained essentially the same. Led by singer/guitarist Steve Marriott's soulful wail, the group enjoyed a huge hit from this record, "30 Days in the Hole" -- the track which defined the Pie's not-so-subtle appeal. The rest of the record is equally funky and intriguing. Stephen Stills guests on "Road Runner 'G' Jam," playing some nasty Hammond organ fills. In the end, though, the group defined themselves as the undisputed leaders of the boogie movement in the early 1970s, as a band.
