Walter Crane 1845-1915
There are 11 full page Walter Crane colour illustrations and each of the remaining 56 pages is highly decorated in the Arts and Crafts style with Pre-Raphaelite and Japanese influences. The standard of decoration is much more sophisticated than other children's books of the time. The wood engraving was undertaken by Edmund Evans, who did a lot of work for Crane and also for Kate Greenaway. The text (by L.C. = Lucy Crane) includes nursery songs from France, Germany and England.
Thirty-seven classic English, French, and German nursery rhymes, both words and music, including "Lucy Locket", "London Bridge", and ""Sur le pont d'Avignon", to name but a few.
All are beautifully illustrated in coloors, including intricate historiated borders and 11 full-page full- colour illustrations.
The designs by Walter Crane (15 august 1845 - 14 march 1915) were more sophisticated than most books designed for children at the time and show the influence of the Pre-Raphaelites, Japanese art and the developing arts and crafts movement.
