4 cd box met de hits geremastered uit 1958 en 1959. Outtakes, try outs en zeldzame tracks. Ze zijn hier allemaal. This is a superb collection of raw, moody, early rock ; roll at its best. Cliff in 1958 was hard, mean, moody, ; he was greasy, murky, crude. He and the shadows (originally called the drifters); rocked; smoked; smarted. Cd 1: (1958-1959): cliff cuts into his first (later flipped) a-side, ;schoolboy crush;; which, despite immature lyrics, sounds mature, strong and enticing. He tears into the hard, throaty chorus of high class baby. The drifters/shadows are exhilarating. Next, cliff rips with authority and power into ;my feet hit the ground; and a storming cover of ;don;t bug me baby;. A medley of superb rock n roll standards from cliff;s 50s ;oh boy show are included; along with a searing, murky version of ;early in the morning;. Cliff;s voice is raw; yet crisp, crystal-clear, alluring and evocative. He hit these high notes with urgency and unaffected spontaneity that would never be heard again despite the beautiful evolution in his voice. Rocker ;never mind, with ballad ;steady with you; follow, showcasing the brilliant guitar licks of hank marvin and bruce welch.Five tracks from cliff;s 1959 first lp ;cliff are included here, including a fast version of first hit move it;, whole lot;a shakin going on; and a live outtake of elvis; ;one night;. Despite battling laryngitis, cliff shreds in with raw vigour and passion. Another two treats await; the thrilling, fast, enticing b-side of t;living doll;, ;apron strings and the hard, steamy, red-hot ;dynamite;. The final songs, taken from cliff;s second album, ;cliff sings, are weaker. Although the cliff sings lp featured magnificently sultry, mature versions of standards such as ;embraceable you;, ;that;s my desire;, it is nondescript, cheesy ballads about playground kisses included here: ;snake and the bookworm;, ;here comes summer and a competent, but not comparing to elvis; - version of ;blue suede shoes;. The exception is cliff;s better-than-the-original version of eddie cochrane;s ;twenty flight rock;.
Cd 2: (1959-61) cliff and the shadows storm on, roaring through excellent rockers ;mean woman blues; and "pointed toe shoes;, with rich, tangy vocals from cliff and superb guitar licks from the band throughout. Then follows the sweetly countryish ;i;m walkin;, then the gorgeously bluesy ;don;t be mad at me; in which we glimpse the soulful depth of cliff;s ballad voice. Next comes a wonderfully deep, tantalizing cover of johnny otis; willie and the hand jive which both vocally and instrumentally far outshines the original; then the energetic, rocking, but strangely poignant ;nine times out of ten;. The next section is devoted mainly to songs from the excellent ;me and my shadows; album, a fantastic mix of blistering rock and roll (;chopping and changing;, ;i;m gonna get you;, and gorgeously mellow, rounded, ballads (evergreen tree;, ;tell me;, ;we have it made;); rich blues (;she;s gone;) and sometimes, these styles brilliantly combined, ( i cannot find a true love;.) A gorgeous alternate version of ;i love you; follows; next, the superbly catchy, slightly suggestive, hilarious ;d in love. The final section is devoted mainly to some beautiful upbeat ballads from lp ;listen to cliff; it;s you is saccharine through exaggerated strings; but ;first lesson in love, ;true love will come to you; are cliff at his gorgeous best. The richest delight, however, is the lusciously enticing, stereo version of ;blue moon; which showcases cliff;s ability to project mood and feelings.
Cd 3 (1961-62) in this third cd a shift in emphasis is evident from pure rock ; roll; and presents a delightful mixture of breathtaking r;r and lush ballads... Mean and moody ;tough enough;, the blistering what id say;forty days; (just wicked), do you wanna dance;, two superb, invigorating live performances from the abc kingston concert , and stunning covers of razzle dazzle; and ;reelin; and rockin;;...Sit alongside the dulcet, beautiful tones of the creamy "next time", the soft, lilting, ;since i lost you, and the magnificent, mellow, jazzy ;spanish harlem; the few inevitable cheesy songs, such as;without you;, ;shame on you; and ;blueberry hill; are cancelled out by wonderful, fresh sounding alternate versions of ;do you remember; and ;it;s all in the game;.
Cd 4 rare ;n; rockin; (1958-63) the final cd, both a fabulous piece of history and compulsive entertainment, is devoted to rare and alternate cliff recordings. The first 2 tracks are cliff;s first recordings ever, a demo of lawdy miss clawdy and ;breathless; which lack polish and sophistication but ooze talent and vitality. There follow four very early live performances, including covers of elvis ;jailhouse rock and ;heartbreak hotel; ; these performances are remarkable and masterful; especially since he was 17 or 18. Cliff really rips into these, and also it;s fantastic to hear these with guitar-based backing. Cliff had, in the drifters/shadows, better musicians than any american r&r singer i;ve heard. We;re treated to a rip-roaring south-african 10; version of what ;d say;; then the cd turns to radio broadcasts; we get fantastic radio luxembourg performances of ;rosalie; and ;got a funny feeling; and after a lovely solo version of ;lessons in love;, we get three absolutely superb live performances of ;hang up your rock nroll shoes", ;dancing shoes; (far outshining the film version) and ;i;ll be me; . These are cutting, rocking, blistering, raw...Wild! The cd ends with a personal message from cliff.
