This comprehensice historical anthology was designed to compass the broad sweep of musical composition in the Western world from the Middle Ages to the present by the inclusion of works representing every important trend, genre, and national school. Since somposers did not create in a musical void, the historically-riented student, analyst, and performer should have available the primary material that permits the establishment of historical connections. This anthology invites such connections.
Originally conceived as a companion to the third edition of Donald Jay Grout's A History of Western Music, the anthology contains 158 complete works or integral excerpts ranging from Gregorian chant to contemporary masterpieces by Berg, Bessaien, Starvinsky, and others. Wherever possible, Palisca has chosen superlative works that are not only typical of their composer's oeuvre, but which also demonstrate socio-musical principles of interaction, innovation, or variation.
The very soundest and most clearly engraved editions of the music have been used throughout, and all texts have been translated into English. Inaddition, two useful appendices and four indispensable indices round out this invaluable compendium>

CLAUDE PALISCA is Professor of the History of Music and chairman of the Reneaissance Studies Program at Yale University. Past President of the American Musicological Society and currently vice-president of the Internatinal Musicological Society, he is a scholar, author, editor, and translator of distinction.
