London, Octopus books ltd/ edgeworth press, 1979. Oblong-4to (31 x 24,5 cm). Pp. (112). Green hardcover, gilt-lettered spine. Title page is a painting by thomas robins of painswick, gloucestershire in 1757. Alphabet letters drawn by David Coster. No dust-jacket, but otherwise a very good copy.
--This garden alphabet has been compiled to illustrate some of the vanished beauties, fashions and eccentricities of former garden and garden ornaments as they have come down to us in paintings, drawings, aquatints and book illustrations. Published on the occasion of the garden exhibition at the victoria and albert museum. From a .. Is for arbour to z .. Is for zoological gardens and each letter with an original engraving from batty langleys pomona, published in 1729 and a full-page coloured illustration from older garden, design and other books. A charming work.
