A stunning custom ordered Gibson L-5 from 1995 in a very desirable natural finish, and probably the most impressive and rare Gibson archtop I’ve ever laid eyes on! With it’s three PAF pickups and Switchmaster inspired configuration this majestic piece looks and sounds like nothing else. Built in Nashville Tennesee, it features a Master Model Label signed by one of Gibson’s top luthiers, Terry Ryan.
This instrument is from the era when Jim Triggs, James Hutchins and Terry Ryan made some of their most impressive archtop guitars at the Gibson Custom Shop, and this incredibly fine L-5 is a great testament of that. From the master-grade flamed maple hand-carved back and laminated neck, to the hand-carved solid spruce top, ebony fretboard, and MOP inlay on the headstock, every detail displays the highest level of quality and craftsmanship. The stinger on the back of the headstock and gold hardware make this breathtaking guitar aesthetically complete.
Despite being 21 years of age this rare L-5 is in excellent+ to near mint condition. A well kept treasure with just a few superficial scratches and a small ding on the top that’s hardly visible. There is a bit of finish checking around the heal and on the edge of the headstock, but that’s what nitrocellulose does, especially on these earlier guitars. Nowadays Gibson adds allot more plasticizers to the finish to prevent checking. Overall a very rare and collectible piece made by one of Gibson’s master builders, that would make a splendid addition to your collection.
Currently set up with set of 011’s the L-5 plays effortlessy and with low action. Lightly played yet well matured, with a complex singing tone that will sweep you of your feet. This is a terrific jazz-box that will handle blues well too. Acoustically it already offer a very loud and pronounced voice, and it’s a joy to play unplugged too.
In general Gibson made some excellent instruments during the 90’s, and at the time the Custom Shop was still a small facility delivering only limited production numbers. Given the historic provenance and the special features on this rare one-off L-5, this modern classic is bound to appreciate more in value over time. A true collectors piece, and a terrific jazzer! Comes in it’s original brown Gibson hardcase.
